Firewall- Event Presentation 1

Right before Thanksgiving break I attended an event at Loyola, which discussed an innovative art project hosted by Joyce Yu-Jean Lee. Ms. Lee is an artist who is based in NYC working with video, installations and performances. Her main medium is creating tech-based art based off of how culture shapes truth and portraying contemporary enlightenment. Her work has been shown globally and published in several high powering magazines and newspapers. This particular event showcased Ms. Lee’s work with FIREWALL.

This project is lead by three talented artists who set out to engage others in dialogue about Internet freedom, through pop up Internet cafes. Firewall is an interactive art and research project that sets up shop and invites people to look at online censorship in other countries specifically China through the search engine Baidu. Baidu is just like Google, but the Chinese version and is much more censored and controlled by the government often misleading the Chinese public with false pictures and comparably different from searching pictures on Google. This is to create dialogue and see the process of Internet visual culture being explored on both search engines.

I found this talk to be very interesting as I have never heard of Firewall before and found it very intriguing and cool how they set up pop up shops in different locations nationally and globally. I think this is a great idea because it creates dialogue and people like I who may not have known about Baidu, gives us a chance to explore and witness how much the Chinese government censors their countries internet and blocks freedom of expression.
