Visibilty
After reading the chapter Visibility, it took me several
times to re read what I was reading, because I did not understand how this
could relate to art or what it meant. The passage starts out with a quote from
Dante, (Purgatorio XVII.25) “Then rained down into the high fantasy…” in which
I did not understand why this line was taken out of Dante or how it would be
related to art in general.
Upon further reading, I in my opinion gained more knowledge
and realized maybe what Dante was saying was that these images came to him from
God and down from heaven as he does state in the text. Dante is trying to understand
his imagination and what role it proceeds and how it occurs the visual part of
it in his mind. Upon further reading the text discusses that there are two
types of imaginative processes in which the first starts with a word then an
image appears. The second type of imaginative process starts with the visual
image first then with the verbal expression following. It is common for the
first process to occur more over then the second process as stated in the text.
After finishing the passage and having to read it multiple
times to truly understand the context of this text, in my opinion Dante is
helping to explain why the imagination process is critical in ones life and it
does have to deal with art because art is imaginative.
